Creativity and New Media

For this project, I will upload a video I made onto YouTube. I used the Media Editing Software called iMovie and used it to create this silly little six second video. New media allowed for this video to be made, edited, and shared.
 Here is the URL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FH_fOu1R63c&feature=youtu.be

Creativity

New media fosters creativity in ways that old media could not. In today's media world, we see people inspired to create content since everything has the possibility to become viral. Nowadays we all see these content creators making and spreading their videos and people become inspired since they think that they can achieve that level of success. Also, with the internet we have access to many different forms of content and that leads to mashups. This was evident with the article in the New Yorker named "1+1+1=1" where it details the phenomenon where people have created mashups since they are inspired to fix the song or even create their own in the process.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are relatively a new phenomenon. They carry the ability to seemingly transport the mind and eyes to a completely new world, all the while we remain sitting by our computers. These new worlds seem to bring new experiences that help people in the real world. This is evident in the Wall Street Journal article "Avatar II: The Hospital" where it details the fact that young nurses have been using the virtual world of Second Life to prepare them for the stressful real world of working at the hospital. That benefits the young inexperienced people that will soon have to carry the burden of actually trying to save the lives of people. Another benefit seems to include the fact that it transports a person to another reality and that serves as an escape from reality. This idea is detailed in the article from the New York Times called "In Room 100, It's Sid and Nancy All Over Again." This article explains to us the benefit of transporting your mind as it tells us the story of Stanley Bard and how he was transported back to the chelsea hotel through the Second Life virtual reality game. Now there are some drawbacks as the virtual reality leaves one stranded on their chair and are relatively inactive for the duration of the stay in the virtual world.
Virtual reality also does foster creativity as it allows the mind to wonder a whole different world that can spark innovative ideas and help influence the mind in ways that was never thought possible. The future of virtual worlds might have already started as the future seems to be the more immersive technology of VR headsets. These headsets allow for the user to physically move around in the world. This provides a more immersive experience that would make a person feel as if they are actually there. At this point it wouldn't be a surprise if they start coming out with virtual realities that somehow transports your mind to a different universe. It sounds like a science fiction movie premise but it soon might become our reality.

Twitter

A Twitter discussion would only be limited to the 140 characters that Twitter allows. Even if you bypass that by threading the tweets, it would be clunky and unhelpful. That hurts it when it is compared with blackboard as a blackboard discussion thread allows for an unlimited amount of characters and it is a much smoother and easier thread building. When compared to an in-class discussion, well there is no comparison since an in-class discussion will always trump anything online as the classroom setting is more engaging than anything that an online discussion can offer.

Social Networking Sites

The four social networking sites that I went on was Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. My impressions of Facebook was that there was a lot of posts that were mostly from my friends that I have connected with on the site. This allows for me to see what they share and some personal photos. Facebook also has the messenger feature which allows for a smooth platform to talk to friends and connect with people. Twitter is a little different as I can see all the tweets that the people i follow have either tweeted or retweeted. This is less personal but also has more of a informative feed as I can follow new twitter pages and also even follow the President to see what complaints he has that specific day. Instagram is basically a flood of many photos from various different sources. There isn't much in words but there are many pictures. YouTube is another social media platform that allows for connectivity. This is through both the videos and the comment section. The YouTubers connect with the people through their videos and they can also talk with the commenters. All four allow for connectivity through their website. Facebook definitely feels the most normal and most personal of the four sites while Twitter was less personal but was more informative. Instagram had both videos and images and felt personal while YouTube was connective and also allowed for a many different videos that would reach a large amount of people.

Social Networking

Social networking sites are all the rage at the moment. Everyone is on these sites, from your grandparent seemingly flooding your timeline on Facebook to your teenage cousin tweeting up a storm. These sites have grown immensely popular and therefore have become very important to the fabric of our society. Nowadays, these sites binds us and allows for more connectivity than the world has ever seen before. Never before has your grandfather from Cuba been able to look at you through a small camera on you phone and actually interact with you. Also, politicians have taken notice of the powers of these social media sites. This is evident with the rise of the former President of the United States Barack Obama. His use of social media to help his campaign is told on the New York Times Article "How Obama Tapped into Social Network's Power." The article mentions the fact that the former President used mass emails to get the word out for his campaign. That allowed for him to connect with so many people and that is the real purpose of social media. These social media sites are connectors that allow more interpersonal relationships to flourish. At least that is the most hopeful way to look at social media sites.
There is dark side to these sites, for pretty much the same reason that it is a helpful tool. That same connectivity allows for more sinister people to get a hold of your attention. Cyberbullying is a phenomenon that was born out of the dark underbelly of the rise of social media. Bullying no longer happens on the playground as social media allows for the bully to be connected to the victim. The bullying can happen even at the home now. There is also the issue of losing that face-to-face time that once was so cherished and common. This is detailed in the New York Times Article titled "Anti-Social Networking." This article mentions the massive amounts of text messages that are sent from friend to friend. Those text messages are taking the place of normal human contact and that could have consequences. These real issue that people have is the concern that relationships are going to be less significant. The quote from the article that reads "whether the quality of their interactions is being diminished without the intimacy and emotional give and take of regular, extended face-to-face time" tells us of the fear. This technology must learn to adapt versus this problem. Somehow these technologies have to find a way to help the young generation grow up with all those meaningful relationships that people fear of losing.

Blog V Wiki

Blogs and Wikis both share space and a purpose on the internet. These two things both have their similarities but they both have the goal of sharing information on the internet. Despite the fact that they both share info, they do it at through different means and they both have their different benefits.
Blogging has its benefits and this is evident with the article by the New York Times called "Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid." This article mentions a specific blog called "bayridgetalk.com." That blog had chronicled some indecent drug situations that had become a problem in the neighborhood. That blog took off and became popular and that led to actions taken against the problem. A blog usually has a singular idea that is made to tell a specific story or problem. That allows it to potentially catch fire in terms of popularity. That is in contrast of Wikis that are more of a encyclopedia of knowledge that many people can contribute to that Wiki.
That is one benefit that Wikis present. It allows for a collaborative process. This is mentioned in the article "More on How to Build Your Own Wikipedia" on CIO.com. Specifically, the article mentions that it "[makes] it easier to gather and share information as well as record discussions about a subject" and it "can help people improve their processes and get projects done faster." Wikis allow for an easier collaboration process but blogs also can be a collaborative process. This would be used to tell the audience of the blog all the perspective of the different writers. That would be clearly marked as opposed to the Wiki way were the Wiki is more of a everyone working at the same thing. Wikis and blogs serve their purpose of sharing information on the internet and that information is important to disperse and these two mediums allow for everyone to see and that is important since there is so many places to get information from on the internet and that is important in the modern networked age.
