Next New

Media is forever changing as technology changes. New media is always unpredictable and anything can become the next big thing. A new media that does not exist that I predict to come is the dream sharing. It might not have a lot of basis in reality but the idea to share dreams with someone and maybe finding a way to project those dreams thought the internet would become the next big thing. When thinking about it, it is already happening as many moviemakers have called movies extensions of our dreams. It might be really far-fetched but it would be an incredible accomplishment and could be where the future lies.

Wiki So Far

On the class wiki, I have mostly worked on an existing page from a prior class. The page mostly deals with podcasting and the various podcasts around. I have mostly either edited the page by adding and subtracting various amounts of things. I found that some of the podcasts were outdated and not as relevant as others so I decided to add some of the more popular podcasts of recent times. I plan on adding more to the page and maybe contributing to some other ones.

P2P

File sharing is basically what the name says it is. It is the idea of sharing files across the internet. In actuality, the process can be illegal because of what is being shared. Peer-to-peer sharing allows people to download either books, tv shows, and movies. This sharing is free, most of the time. That takes from the potential money that the creators of those content can make. That rubs the massive companies off till they just blow out. They don't usually like when they lose money so that is why there has been action taken against these pirates. According to the New York Times article "Should Online Scofflaws Be Denied Web Access?"  "the American entertainment industry says accounts for the loss of $20 billion a year in sales. Several lawmakers vowed to increase scrutiny of international markets where piracy is widespread." That amount of money is hard to overcome and that makes those people angry. Peer-to-peer sharing is a modern day burglar heist or it can be seen as a Robin Hood situation where the poor is taking from the rich to spread art to those who might not be able to afford it.

Privacy

The issue of privacy is one of the absolute importance in the era of new media. Never in our history have we ever been so public and never have we allowed so much public access to our lives as we have done now. It is important to remember that whatever a person posts on a social media site and whatever we search on the internet is available to find. We also put a lot of faith in stuff like banking apps that has the potential to be hacked. Lost are the times where most people are only visible to those close to them. Now we lack the privacy that our parents had since we post our lives onto the internet, for everyone to see.

Advice

If I were hired by Baruch College to use new media in order to improve the college, I would suggest the college to try to embrace social media to spread the word of how great Baruch College. A person that might be looking for options for college. These prospective students have a lot to show with what they post and using social media, which is new media, can weed out the crowd and potentially find the best students.
